Hyperbole - An extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, ex. “to wait an eternity.”
Alliteration - When words with the same first letter are repeated. ex. Aunt Anna always ate apples.
Rhythm & Rhyme - Rhyme is words that have the same sound that make rhythm. ex. Fox in a box, Cat in a hat.
Metaphor - Describing something with a word which isn't literally true. ex. Life is a roller coaster.
Analogy- A similarity between two things. ex. It has often been said that movie stars are the royalty of America.
Repetition - To repeat certain things to make a point.
Personification - When you give a non human a quality of a human. ex. The wind howled.
Allusion - An incidental mention of something. ex. An allusion to shakespeare.
Oxymoron- a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous,seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in “cruel kindness”. ex. a low-key wedding.
Euphemism- the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt. ex. to pass away instead of to die.
Imagery - When something can be read and than an image forms in your mind. ex. He had a big, crystal clear diamond.
Irony- To use words to say the opposite of the meaning. ex. “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
Malapropism- An act or habit of misusing words ridiculously, especially by the confusion of words that are similar in sound. ex. I am not under the affluence of alcohol.
Onomatopoeia- The formation of a word, as cuckoo, meow, honk, or boom, by imitation of a sound made by or associated with its referent. ex. meow, boom, bang, honk.
Satire - The use of irony, sarcasm to highlight humor.
Simile - When 2 unlike things are compared to each other. ex. She is like a rose.
Symbol - A symbol is something that has meaning in a piece of writing. ex. The china figures in "Then there were none" represented how many people were left and how many died.
Theme - The theme is what the author is trying to tell you. ex. The theme in "A mountain journey" was that one bad mistake can lead to multiple bad mistakes.
